The very first Official South African Music Charts – went live on September 1st 2021 and Ed Sheeran’s Bad Habits made no. 1.
Bad Habits is now the first track to top the newly launched, The Official South Africa Music Charts (TOSAC). A first, both in scale and magnitude, in the country.
Brought to you by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA), TOSAC – which will kick off with a focus on ‘singles’ in the digital music streaming space – the chart will celebrate the popularity and success of the music being enjoyed from diverse artists by music fans across the country.
Ed Sheeran recently returned with his new single ‘Bad Habits’ (available on across all DSPs listen here) which is joined by the Dave Meyers-directed official video (view here).
Spending the last few years out of the spotlight following his record-breaking two-year Divide tour and the arrival of his first daughter, Ed Sheeran marks his official return with the euphoric ‘Bad Habits’. Sheeran is an artist who motors on nonconformity, with today’s release landing as something unexpected yet wholly his; a testament to a forward-thinking artist who continues to push his art into new dimensions. Deploying an up-tempo, summery sonic alongside his treasured guitar, and a track that channels escapist energy, Ed co-wrote and co-produced ‘Bad Habits’ with long-time collaborators, Johnny McDaid (‘Shape of You’) and FRED (No.6 Collaborations Project).
In the accompanying official video – directed by Dave Meyers (Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar) – we see Ed as we’ve never seen him before as he depicts an alter-ego vampire character. Trading his distinct ginger hair for bleached white and his teeth for fangs, the dark-humour narrative serves as a metaphor for ‘bad habits’ as Ed embarks on a wild night out alongside his crew of ghouls before morphing back to his real self the next morning, ginger hair intact, as the sun rises over him. The official video made its global broadcast premiere on MTV Live/MTVU/MTV’s global network of channels today and was also trailed on ViacomCBS Times Square billboard.
Ed Sheeran says – “Feels great to be back with my new single. I wanted the video for Bad Habits to play on the nature of habits in a fantastical way so I decided on vampires. It was mega fun getting into character except for the heights (that wasn’t so fun). Enjoy x”
To ensure accuracy and that the charts represent the broad South African digital music spectrum, TOSAC will aggregate data from three digital streaming platforms popularly used by local audiences: Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer.
Says Sean Watson, the Chairperson of RiSA: “We are incredibly excited to be launching such a pioneering platform for the South African music industry and audiences, across different genres. This represents a significant milestone and a much needed step up to aligning with popular forms of music consumption for the local music industry.
Added Nhlanhla Sibisi, the CEO of RiSA: “We have a robust music industry in our country, and our people have a natural thirst for music. We have also seen an undeniable shift in how people consume music in the past few years, with more and more audiences making use of streaming services than before. We are thus excited to put in place an offering that not only recognises that but is set to help drive the growth of our industry.”

How the charts are aggregated:
Chart week will be from Friday to Thursday.
Only digital streaming numbers are taken into account.
The number of streams shown in the charts is always weighted, so that subscription streams have more relevance than ad-funded streams.
Currently, no track exclusion policy or Accelerated Decline method is being applied.
Different versions of a track are aggregated to their corresponding original track, i.e.
Same song with additional featuring artists
DJs remixes, as long as the original artist is credited
Different language/country versions
Album covers are not aggregated to the original track.
