The seats are dusted and the red plush curtains will rise again at Sandton’s iconic THEATRE ON THE SQUARE! It will gradually reopen after 20 months of Covid closure as it’s now time to gather together again, safely, to celebrate the joy of live entertainment! Producer, Daphne Kuhn enthuses: “We feel strongly that nothing could be more appropriate than to start with the healing and uplifting power of beautiful music. The show must go on!”
Theatre on the Square’s SUMMER MUSIC SEASON will usher in the festive season on a high note with a diverse programme of concerts featuring some of South Africa’s most celebrated musicians. Classical Music to Soul, R&B, Jazz and a taste of Christmas cheer is in the line-up. This will be the theatre’s soundtrack to the official re-opening in the New Year with productions of thrilling new South African plays, comedies, jazz and much more.
Following global trends, the theatre will be enforcing a masked, no vaccination, no entry policy, to protect our patrons, artists and staff alike. With all the health protocols in place and spaced seating, we are ready to welcome you back to THEATRE ON THE SQUARE! Tickets for the theatre’s classical music concerts will be R100 or R60 for members. This excludes prices for outside concerts. There will be unreserved seating and we shall be experimenting with performances at different times.

Peta Ann Holdcroft (Cello) Malané Hofmeyr-Burger (Flute), Irene Tsoniff (Violin), Ivo Ivanov (Violin),Vladimir Ivanov (Viola) and Rosemary Kane (harp) will be playing works by Vivaldi, Strauss and Piazzolla

Catch the exclusive solo piano performance by multi-award winning pianist and composer, KYLE SHEPHERD and a conversation with jazz writer and art historian, PERCY MABANDU.
Kyle has been touring with William Kentridge and is a recipient of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Jazz.
Shepherd will present music from his new solo piano record, After the Night, the Day Will Surely Come. Tickets are R250.

Marvel at the incredible talents of JPO Concert Master and first violinist, Miro Chakaryan and pianist Jacob Swart as they perform works by Wieniawski, Kreisler, Ernst, von Vecsey, Shostakowich as well as the SA premiere of the magnificent violin and piano works by Karin LeFlak.

Multiple award-winning flute player Khanyisile Mthetwa, named a “Top Young South African” by the Mail and Guardian presents South African & American music for Flute from her latest album AFRICAN BIRD accompanied by award winning pianist, Peter Cartwright.
Friday, 10th December – PRISMATICA with Laura Pauna @ 1pm
Brilliant internationally recognised pianist Laura Pauna will be performing works from her upcoming solo album PRISMATICA – a curated collection of diverse piano works written by South African composers and more. This will be an exploration of contemporary compositions that embrace our shared heritage and colourful history. Laura Pauna will give premiere performances of these new works.
Drinks will be available at each performance at the theatre’s famous red theatre.
