Choreographer, dancer, singer and actor, Nicol Sheraton first appeared in the ensemble of a Janice Honeyman pantomime at Joburg Theatre in 2006’s Aladdin. Since then he has become a regular and very popular face in the annual pantomimes, not only as a cast member but often as the choreographer too, debuting in this role with the 2015 pantomime Sleeping Beauty.

This year Nicol Sheraton is once again thrilled to join the panto family as the choreographer of Cinderella. “I am always extremely satisfied creatively when choreographing Janice Honeyman’s pantomimes,” says Nicol. “The product is always so diverse, catering for audiences of all ages.”

As seamless as it may appear, being a cast member of a pantomime isn’t an easy task, as the choreography is demanding: the cast members endure strenuous rehearsal schedules and need to be incredibly fit to sustain their energy throughout the show’s eight-week performance season.

“When auditioning for panto, there are many things that we take into consideration in order to put together the most dynamic, colourful and vibrant ensemble,” says Nicol. “The ensemble plays such an important part of the panto; one could even refer to the ensemble as being the spine or back bone of panto. I always look for ensemble members who have some kind of formal dance background. However, if they don’t and are willing to learn and can pick up choreography quickly, this would count in their favour.”

With twenty years of dance and choreography experience, Nicol Sheraton made his stage debut at the age of seventeen in the multi-award winning Baxter Theatre production of Suip, for which he won the FNB Vita Theatre Award for Best Newcomer. Ever since then, he has been involved as a performer and choreographer in the local theatre and corporate scenes as well as in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Dubai, Greece, Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt, Mauritius, Namibia and the Seychelles.

Nicol Sheraton has been involved as a dancer in the Sun City Extravaganzas Odyssey, Afrodizzia and Too Darn Hot, as well as in the musicals Jesus Christ Superstar, Chicago, We Will Rock You, Footloose, The King and I, The Boys in The Photograph, Mamma Mia!, Dreamgirls, Starlight Express (dance captain), Leifling, Fusion (the Bollywood extravaganza), HIStory – the Michael Jackson tribute, Immaculate – the Madonna tribute, Blame it On Bollywood (dance captain), Beautiful Creatures and the Janice Honeyman pantomimes Aladdin, Snow White and Jack and the Beanstalk.

His career as a choreographer includes the shows Sister Act (for which he received a Naledi Award nomination) and the pantomimes Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood, Pinocchio, Snow White and Jack and the Beanstalk – all produced by Joburg Theatre and Bernard Jay – Aspoestertjie for Addlife Productions, the Vintage Varga Girls for Cantare at Montecasino, Oh Golly It’s Bolly for Gold Reef City, Clash of the Choirs for SABC and for the National Children’s Theatre, Under The Baobab Tree, A Year with Frog and Toad, Heidi, Pippilangkos, Lion and the Library and Oliver Twist.

Nicol also has a qualification from the Austrian Fitness and Aerobic School as a Group Fitness Instructor and often hosts and teaches a series of Musical Theatre dance workshops.
