From the first words and notes that Johannesburg-based alternative/modern rock outfit Climate Control began piecing together in 2008, the emphasis has always been to create something genuine, memorable and shared. After many years of releasing music and performing together, the time has come for members Nicolas Gonzalez, Luca Zeeman and Ricky Dunningham to put Climate Control to rest.
The band has released the fourth and final song in their series of singles, self-recorded and produced during lockdown; the melodic and poignant Three Act Structure. Their final song is a look back at the reasons that the members began making music together in the early days of its formation, and the feeling of excitement and invincibility that came along with writing and composing those very first songs. The official music video was created in collaboration with 3D artist Luke Knox.
“We’ve been sitting with this decision for a while now, although time hasn’t made it any easier to make. After many years of making music together, we think it’s time to put Climate Control to rest.
This comes from a place of mutual understanding, and we’re glad to say this was not borne of any bad blood between us. As the members of the band have begun finding themselves on diverging paths, whether in the form of starting fresh in new countries or pursuing different passions, we think this is the right decision for now. Along the way since playing our first shows in 2008, we’ve met tons of incredible people and made amazing friends, been privileged enough to share the stage with lots of local and international artists, shared countless laughs and shenanigans, shot some music videos, spent many joyous hours in studio meticulously crafting sounds, encountered some assholes, learned valuable lessons, and made a vast pool of memories. Amidst the ever-shifting music industry landscape and the difficulty of maintaining something that takes a shit load of effort, drive, blood, sweat and tears (as well as money) to keep going, we’re immensely proud of what we did manage to achieve over these years of making music together.
‘Three Act Structure’ is a song that we believe to be one of our best, and represents the years of creation, performance and brotherhood that we’ve spent with one another since those early days of writing our first lyrics and riffs while imagining the feeling of playing them live one day.
While Climate Control may be, let’s say on indefinite hiatus for now, music will never leave any of us who make up the parts of its whole. It’s in our blood. Each of us will continue to create or work with music, and if you’ve enjoyed anything we’ve created over the years, we hope you continue on the next journey with us.
Until then, we hope our music lives on with you. We’ll cherish every memory made along the way.
We’ve been Climate Control. Thank you for listening.”
