Jazz artist, Asanda Mqiki to tour Cape Town to kick off crowdfunding campaign for debut album
Fresh after her selection as one of the Top 5 finalists of this year’s espYoungLegends music competition, the multi-award-winning powerhouse vocalist Asanda Mqiki has announced dates to tour Cape Town. Multiple venues will host Mqiki and her band from 30 November to 3 December, as she prepares to raise finance for her first ever solo studio album, which will be recorded at F# Music in the Mother City.
Hailing from Port Elizabeth, like other SA music legends before her – think Feya Faku and Zolani Mahola – Asanda Mqiki comes from the strong choral tradition of the Eastern Cape, and her signature musical style brings together jazz, funk and soul, with influences from R&B to Kwaito. She has been described as “a true Afro-Soul revelation with an insane amount of control over her notes” and will treat audiences to her repertoire of original South African jazz.
Some of Asanda’s recent highlight shows include headlining the Cape Town Festival with Vicky Sampson and Jimmy Nevis, performing at the National Arts Festival, and playing for the first time with her full band at the Orbit in Johannesburg, to a standing ovation. Online culture magazine, Texx & the City, after seeing her at Oppikoppi 2016, said: “Emotive and sassy, exuding a jazzy persona unlike anything I’ve seen, she was my best vocal performance of the weekend”. Her “Vocal Explosion” jazz collaboration with Maya Spector played to capacity houses at the Market Theatre and the Cape Town Fringe festival.
Before she went solo in 2013, Asanda performed regularly with platinum-selling a cappella group The Soil, and is especially known for her collaboration on the song “Lizzy”. She was lead vocalist for the band Take Note, with whom she released two albums and performed at top SA festival Joy of Jazz. Asanda has shared the stage and collaborated with artists such as the legendary Sibongile Khumalo, Freshlyground, The Soil, Khaya Mahlangu, Bongeziwe Mabandla, Putuma Tiso & Berita.
Asanda will be performing with her quartet, featuring Thoba Goba on drums, Grant Allison on bass and Mthokozisi Mabuza on keys.
The tour kicks off on Thursday 30 November at 8pm with a performance at Harringtons Cocktail Lounge in the Cape Town CBD. The regular Thursday jazz evenings at this upmarket bar draw a diverse crowd who enjoy both the music and the excellent cocktails.
On Friday 1 December, the quartet performs at stalwart music venue Kaleidoscope Café in Main Road Claremont, with a feature by host Glenn Robertson. Doors open at 7.30pm and the ticket includes a homecooked meal.
On Saturday 2 December at 4pm, Asanda plays the popular and relaxed venue Jazz in the Native Yards at KwaSec, Gugulethu – surprisingly easy to get to for those that don’t know the area too well.
The tour wraps up on Sunday 3 December at 7pm with a performance at SlowLife at the Olympia Bakery in Kalk Bay, now firmly established as a presenter of quality jazz and live music in the Southern Peninsula.
The crowdfunding campaign for Asanda Mqiki’s debut album has just launched on www.thundafund.com and more information is available there – to make it fun and worthwhile, supporters have a variety of packages to choose from that include a private concert, executive producer credits, personalised and dedicated tracks and merchandise as well as pre-ordered CDs.
